Women's wages and economic crisis in Costa Rica

Article Abstract:

Changes in male-female earnings and wage differentials in the early 1980s when Costa Rica was experiencing an economic crisis were examined. In particular, the study analyzed the effect of the economic crisis on the labor market returns of women relative to those of men. The results indicate that the decrease in the human capital of the employed women relative to that of employed men brought about the increase in male-female wage differential during the recession from July 1980 to July 1982.

Economic development and population concentration

Article Abstract:

The relationship between economic development and population concentration is reassessed using time series analysis of data from Israel. The results confirm the popular view that the relationship follows a U-shaped pattern as opposed by the results of previous cross-sectional analysis. Population concentration is found to be affected by transportation costs and population size and dispersal occurs when economic development progresses.

Poverty and the economic transition in the Russian federation

Article Abstract:

Economic reforms have brought about rapid economic and social change in Russia. These reforms have adversely affected income levels in the country, triggering widespread dissatisfaction with the government. However, the adverse effects on income are expected to last only temporarily, with reforms eventually benefiting Russia in the long-term. Empirical evidence indicates that fears of rising poverty in Russia are unfounded.
