Working poverty in southern California: Towards an operational measure

Article Abstract:

The 12 definitions of work and poverty are compared that may assist in providing a better understanding of the people who come under the category of the working poor and provide suggestions for a simple and realistic operational measure of working poverty. The results show that the working poor families fall under a diverse group of people depending upon the definition but a dominance of families with young children, fewer adult workers is observed.

Diffusion, cohort change, and social patterns of smoking

Article Abstract:

The inverse relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and smoking is studied on the basis of diffusion and status distinction. Results indicate that when the old and the new cohorts are compared, a correspondence is observed between the stage of cigarette diffusion and the direction and strength of the relationships of education, parental status, urban residence and gender with cigarette smoking.
