A case study: mob influence at its worst: the case of local 560

Article Abstract:

A case study of New Jersey's Local 560 is examined that illustrates the way in which gangsters acquired and maintained enclaves of control within the union. Local 560 not only affected local members, but also influenced joint council, regional and international levels of the union.

The mob: moving into business-labor racketeering

Article Abstract:

The study stated racketeering in industries was a problem for business owners and labor unions, with an oversupply of labor. Business and unions faced criminal adversaries, which were brutal and far more disciplined and sophisticated.

The past: "we were at war": labor movement violence and the role of the underworld

Article Abstract:

The labor movement in the 1930s and 1940s was marked by violence. The threat to national security from violence during strikes was less due to the established order than to the Teamsters Union becoming powerful.
