AIDS and aging

Article Abstract:

There is an increasing number of older Americans being infected with AIDS. However, society does not seem to recognize the presence of the disease among the elderly due to the apparent conservativeness of their sexual practices. The HIV/AIDS and Aging Task Force was instituted to address the different concerns of the older population regarding AIDS in relation to aging. The goal of the Task Force includes increasing the awareness of society that AIDS should also be acknowledged as an issue relevant to aging.

Intergenerational mentoring: a viable strategy for meeting the needs of vulnerable youth

Article Abstract:

An estimated 14 million American youths are in danger of becoming school dropouts, drug addicts and criminals. Studies have shown that mentors can help foster self-esteem in teenagers as they go through adolescence. The elderly can serve as ideal mentors for problem youth because they already have a lifetime of experience to share with these younger people. They also have the time to give attention to these teenagers. Elders can be companions, teachers, and role models to the youth.
