Achieving multiple topic shifts in primary care medical consultations: a conversation analysis study in UK general practice

Article Abstract:

The article examines the patient-physician discourse, focusing on patients' timing and organization of the introduction of health-related topics. Two forms of discourse are identified: the in-situ announcement and the pre-announcement. It is posited that these forms of managing multiple health topics are a normal part of the patient-physician dialogue.

The social organisation of chemotherapy treatment consultations

Article Abstract:

Rituals of doctor-patient interaction in outpatient chemotherapy are discussed. The discussion focuses on the way the assessment activities of the encounter inform the treatment decisions. How the interactive resources used in the consultation relate to the incorporation of patients' views in routine decisions is also discussed.

Children as informal interpreters in GP consultations: pragmatics and ideology

Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed regarding the appropriateness of children assuming the role of interpreter between the general practitioner (GP) and adult patient in primary health care consultations. GPs faced with operational constraints due to the limited availability of professional interpreters will accept children in this role.
