The missing voice of the critically ill: a medical sociologist's first-person account

Article Abstract:

What makes up the patient's experience with critical illness is discussed by a former patient in an intensive care unit. Notebooks such as this ex-patient used to communicate while on a respirator may help scholars and the outside world construct accounts of the ICU patient's experience and move scholars towards a sociology of the critically ill patient.

Daily and lifecourse contexts of smoking

Article Abstract:

The life narratives of rituals and rites of passage in smokers' lives are used to show the importance of smoking in these peoples' lives and the effort required to break the habit. This discussion adds another perspective to the more physiologically-based explanations of the difficulties of smoking cessation.
