The influence of chronic control concerns on counterfactual thought

Article Abstract:

A study to document the function of counterfactual thinking (CT) suggests that depressed individuals use CT as a compensatory mechanism, especially for events which might be repeated in their lives. A group of psychology students were tested for depression and classified as depressed or nondepressed, then asked to describe negative events which were either repeatable or nonrepeatable. Results indicated depressed participants were more likely to make statements reflecting CT with repeatable events and thus enhanced their feelings of control over future events.

Ego depletion: A resource model of volition, self-regulation, and controlled processing

Article Abstract:

This study focuses on the ego as an energy resource of the self. Making choices, exhibiting self-restraint, and other self-regulatory processes are believed to deplete the ego. Ego depletion has been shown to result in a reliance on routine, passive behaviors until the energy is restored.
