The challenge of aging and social policy

Article Abstract:

The editor of the 'Journal of Aging & Social Policy,' who is preparing to leave the editorship of the publication, asks if the journal has contributed any vital data, dialogue and knowledge in aging policy since its birth. Since gerontology is a relatively new field and since the drafts it has attracted have come mostly from professionals in the fields of gerontology and social policy, the editor describes the articles that the journal has so far featured as too traditional even as he wishes that, under the next editor, the journal will be able to stimulate critical thinking and debate.

Introduction: Japan's aging society

Article Abstract:

The most rapidly aging society in Japan bears several social and economic implications for the public policies for the service of the growing elderly. Japan has to find ways to simultaneously support its older population and retain its economic competitiveness. The increased costs of health and social service for the care of the aged and the cultural attitude of 'ikigai' have significant role in formulating aging-related policy in Japan. A major contribution to such social programs is the introduction of the Ten-Year Strategy to Promote Health Care and Welfare for the Aged.

Public policy and the 104th Congress

Article Abstract:

The 104th Congress provided insight into the political processes involved in public policy making and the issues in aging policy. Policy making involves the interactive process of decision making. The opposition to public hearings indicates that the staff of the Congressional committees want a decrease in legislation and public involvement. One of the major proposals to the Congress was removal of the Title IV of the Older Americans Act.
