Opportunities and challenges for social workers crossing borders

Article Abstract:

Labor mobility among social workers is increasing and they are facing various challenges and opportunities while crossing borders to work in foreign countries. Social workers crossing over should consider several factors like a destination, linguistic abilities, acquiring visas and comparability of qualifications and to help them with these hurdles, agencies responsible for regulating entry to the profession should provide a database of schools in foreign countries that provide equivalent diplomas.

Article Abstract:

The final draft of National Family Policy (2006) of South Africa, which will significantly influence social worker's approach to families, is examined. The policy can be commended for its vision on welfare of families but is negated by its conservative approach on family forms, traditional gender based division of labor and lack of specific guidelines.

Using Foucault's concept of power to analyze school discipline and draw implications for school social work service in Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

Michel Foucault's conception of power is used to provide a new frame of reference to explain how power relations exist in school discipline and contribute to the constitution of student's and teacher's subjectivities. It is argued that such a perspective can help school social workers enhance their reflexivity and promote empowering practices.
