Everyday experiences of implicit rationing: comparing the voices of nurses in California and British Columbia

Article Abstract:

This article compares managed care organizations in the United States and British Columbia. The authors, analyzing data from group interviews conducted with nurses in British Columbia and California, argue managed care in both countries does not live up to its promises of more efficient and cheaper health care, and maintain medical care is rationed by early discharge policies and staff reduction.

Delivering the 'new' Canadian midwifery: the impact on midwifery of integration into the Ontario health care system

Article Abstract:

The impact of the integration of the profession of midwifery into Ontario's provincial health care system is discussed. Midwifery changed to a more bureaucratically organized profession and its educational model from an apprentice-based approach to a baccalaureate degree program. The midwifery model of practice was retained, however.
