Affective and cognitive processes as mediators of media influences on crime-policy preferences

Article Abstract:

This article examines the persuasiveness of the media in influencing citizens' preferences regarding two forms of crime policies: preventive and punitive. The author, focusing on individual media use, argues individuals who are exposed to complex media content prefer preventive crime measures, whereas individuals who tend to watch simple infotainment formats prefer punitive crime measures.

Do citizens want to have their say? Media, agricultural biotechnology, and authoritarian views of democratic processes in science

Article Abstract:

The citizens' authoritarian views of decision processes related to agriculture biotechnology and media's role in the development of such attitudes is examined. The model tests links between citizenEs media use and their views of democratic processes in science by using measures of institutional trust, scientific knowledge, and fears and concerns related to science and biotechnology.

Effects of media use on audience framing and support for welfare

Article Abstract:

A survey about cuts in welfare benefits shows mass media coverage of this issue broadens the possibilities for solutions to public problems. Entertainment and news media shape individual opinion on this issue while also being derived from the public's policy preferences.
