Social development in sub-Saharan Africa: lessons for social work practice in South Africa

Article Abstract:

This article discusses possible strategies social workers can utilize in helping improve the social conditions in sub-Saharan Africa and other developing countries. The author argues that social development must put humans first, recognizing what is best for them socially, economically, politically, and in terms of health and medical care.

Africentric social work practice: the new approach for social work practice intervention in the 21st century

This article examines how Africentric social work practice can be used as a model towards helping social workers worldwide to understand the significance of multiculturalism. The author maintains the African social work model perceives people of African ancestry who are minorities as individuals who require a unique cultural understanding.

Social work education in a changing socio-political and economic dispensation: perspectives from South Africa

Suggestions are offered regarding the alteration of social work education curricula in South Africa, which address the specific changes occurring with the elimination of apartheid. These include universal standards for training, more emphasis on community and group projects, and a broader interdisciplinary approach.
