An alternative to farmer age as an indicator of life-cycle stage: The case for a farm family age index

Article Abstract:

The notion that a family farm is managed by a single 'principal decision maker' (PDM) that formed the basis of most quantitative and behavioral studies in agriculture is increasingly found to be flawed and the question arises whether the age of the PDM is representative of farm structure, strategy or life-cycle stage. A study undertaken to examine the impact of using an alternative index indicated that a family age index is a better indicator of farm structural and managerial features than PDM age.
