An evolving event: changes in coping strategies

Article Abstract:

Coping strategies in response to stressful events differ and identifying these differences is relevant for social work practice. It is important for social workers to see stressful events as dynamic and to be able to deal with changes in coping strategies in response to changes in the event. They may want to reinforce appropriate strategies and to help clients develop new ones. The Gulf War was used as an example of a stressful evolving event because it involved Israel's whole population and changes over time could be singled out.

The risk of perpetuating cycles of misunderstanding and creating myths is ever present because meaning always has the potential of getting lost in translation.
