Appellate court supervision in the federal judiciary: a hierarchical perspective

Article Abstract:

Factors that influence circuit courts' affirmation or reversal of federal district court decisions are analyzed using agency theory. Signaling behavior by the district courts and the behavior of the US Supreme Court toward individual circuits are found to be important factors. Civil rights cases from 1971 to 1999 are used as the basis of the study.

The contract as social artifact

Article Abstract:

Contracts are worthy of being studied as social artifacts as well as legal creations. A social study of contracts leads to identification of the technical and symbolic characteristics of contract. This leads to the study of dynamics of contracts between individuals and of larger contract regimes maintained by social systems.

Lawyers for conservative causes: clients, ideology, and social distance

Article Abstract:

A study of lawyers who work with conservative political causes is presented.
