Bored and busy: sociology of knowledge of clerical workers

Article Abstract:

The use of a sociology of knowledge approach and a semiotic square allowed the study of subordination and empowerment processes among clerical workers in offices. Four categories associated with either boredom or busyness were identified, particularly, bored, busy, not-busy and not-bored. Various combinations of these four categories resulted in conclusions that the process of subordination occurs when clerical workers are engaged in bored/busy work. The process of empowerment occurs when workers participate in not-bored/not-busy work.
