Capital punishment and contemporary values: people's misgivings and the court's misperceptions

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court has reversed its approach to death penalty statutes since the 1970s. The 1972 Furman v. Georgia decision declared most capital punishment laws unconstitutional because they were unfair, capricious and arbitrary. In the 1990s, the Supreme Court is paying more attention to an interpretation of public opinion that says the majority approves of capital punishment. Surveys indicate the Court may be misinterpreting public opinion. In polls, people support life imprisonment without parole over the death penalty and consider the death penalty too arbitrary.

Exposure reduction or retaliation? The effect of domestic violence resources on intimate-partner homicide

Article Abstract:

The effect of the presence of resources to prevent domestic violence on the rate of intimate-partner homicides is assessed. In general, such resources have lowered homicide rates. However, resources that fail to significantly reduce potential victims' exposure to domestic violence may actually motivate retaliation violence and be counterproductive.

Capital trials and representations of violence

Article Abstract:

Sociological analysis of the use of the death penalty in the US should focus on its function as symbolic representation of violence in the community. Other aspects that should be researched include public opinion about capital punishment, the relationship between legal and illegal violence and the presentation of violence in capital trials.
