Childhood history of abuse and child abuse screening

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to quantify the effects of a childhood history of abuse to parental child abuse. Two tests, the Child Abuse Potential (CAP) Inventory and the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS), were given to three comparison groups of mothers, nonabusive mothers without a history of abuse, abusive mothers with a history of abuse and nonabusive mothers with a history of abuse. A childhood history of abuse was found to be directly related to future child abuse and high CTS verbal and violence scales among both abusive and nonabusive mothers. The CAP scales were less demonstarative, with only rigidity and unhappiness as indicative of a childhood history of abuse.

Countertransference in the family therapy of survivors of sexual abuse

Article Abstract:

Countertransference as experienced by the therapist during family therapy of sexual abuse victims is discussed. It is noted that the therapist's social, moral, political and other inherent beliefs color and influence the directions of therapy, sometimes even without their knowing it. Countertransference is critical in therapy and the therapist must be aware of his blind spots to avoid any pitfalls.
