Collective subjectivity, democracy and domination: the MJVA in Marathwada, India

Article Abstract:

The example of the Marathwada Janata Vikas Aandolan (MJVA) is used to enquire the ways in which processes of modernity, reflexivity and identity formation combined to shape the movement against exclusion and marginality. The antecedents of the movement, its dynamics and its many impacts are focused and the methods in which the actual terrain of development in India was mapped by the MJVA are shown.

Between a defence of society and a politics of the subject: the specificity of today's social movements

Social systems developed only in industrial societies that were culturally homogeneous. Globalization has profoundly destabilized social movements by putting an end to or rendering irrelevant ways in which cultures, economies and political systems were integrated.

Social movements, the media and the emergence of a global public sphere: from anti-apartheid to global justice

Article Abstract:

The strategies of public communication during the anti-apartheid movement that included the creation of alternative media and a global public sphere are discussed. They are compared to those of the contemporary movement for global justice.
