Comparing preference and resistance to change in constant and variable-duration schedule components

Article Abstract:

Experiments with pigeons on convariation of resistance to change and preference extend earlier work in this area. However, this study suggests reinforcement numerosity may sometimes affect these behaviors in unanticipated ways.

Effects of unsignaled delay of reinforcement on preference and resistance to change

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to investigate the influence of unsignaled delay of reinforcement on pigeons' preference and resistance to change in multiple schedules. The experiment was characterized by initial and terminal-link cycles that both ended with the delivery of food reinforcement. The animals completed at least 90 sessions of resistance-to-extinction and resistance-to-prefeeding tests, and baseline training. Results suggested that response topographies may be established by different contingencies of immediate reinforcement that form high or low response rates.
