Choice in a variable environment: every reinforcer counts

Article Abstract:

Researches sought to induce in pigeons adaptation in foraging strategy to compensate for variations in their environment. Implications regarding natural selection are discussed.

Concurrent-schedule performance in transition: changeover delays and signaled reinforcer ratios

Article Abstract:

Experimental sessions in which six pigeons were trained to arrange six or seven components with various concurrent-schedule reinforcer ratios associated with each. Analysis revealed that preference was extreme towards the reinforced alternative for the first 25 seconds after reinforcement in changeover-delay conditions regardless of component were signaled or not.

Residence time and choice in concurrent foraging schedules

Article Abstract:

Multiple reinforcers in each entry into an option on standard concurrent schedules can control response, time allocation and choice made by foraging pigeons. Both response and time allocation to an alternative increase with an increase in frequency values and a decrease in probability values when pigeons are given a choice between concurrently available and signaled response alternatives. The residence times are more than those which maximize the obtained reinforcer rates. Further, the response- and time-allocation ratios are less than the reinforcer-arrival and reinforcer-frequency ratios.
