Peer group acceptance and academic performance among adolescents participating in a dropout prevention program

Article Abstract:

Peer group acceptance has an indirect rather than a direct impact on academic achievement in adolescents, according to research undertaken among 665 students from 21 middle and high schools in North Carolina and Florida. The research used five primary measures: peer group acceptance, academic achievement, school influence, sense of school coherence and avoidance of problem behaviour. In each of two stages of data analysis, at least one of the school-related attitudes and behaviour variables was directly and positively linked with academic performance.

Sense of school coherence, perceptions of danger at school, and teacher support among youth at risk of school failure

Article Abstract:

Applications of the competing and immunity models that consider risk and protective factors that affect outcomes for high school students identified as at risk for failure showed that the first model indicated reliable data support. Perception of crime and violence in school had a negative impact on school coherence, while support from faculty showed a positive effect on students.
