Conscientization--The experience of Canadian social work students in Mexico

Article Abstract:

The experiences of three groups of Canadian social work students, who traveled to Mexico for an intense experiential learning course, are reported. Conscientization is defined as the deepening attitude of awareness characteristic of all emergences from reality of life situation, and the ten-day cultural immersion experience of the students indicated that through experiential learning the students could examine their own understanding and views of poverty, difference and global connectedness.

Social capital as a strategy to overcome poverty in Latin America: An overview

Article Abstract:

Community social capital complements public services in various ways thus incorporating social capital components into poverty eradication programs can promote urban micro-enterprises and peasant production in poor Latin American areas. The concept of social capital is the structure of social relations that facilitates action, and the presence of a strategy, which is a network of horizontal relations and associated norms that permits the undertaking of collective activities.
