Consultation on the countryside premium scheme: creating a 'market' for information

Article Abstract:

A structure-conduct-performance analysis is presented on the information market arising from agricultural and environmental policy implementation in Scotland. Findings show that groups affected by the policies have significantly different levels of access to the processes and information involved in policy-making, due to variances in resource availability and prioritizing.

Car dependence in rural Scotland: transport policy, devolution and the impact of the fuel duty escalator

Article Abstract:

A critique is presented on Scotland's fuel duty escalator, a gasoline tax, which presents a significant economic burden to rural residents, the segment of the population most reliant on privately owned motor vehicles for transportation. It is suggested that the government subsidize rural services and shops to reduce rural dependency on automobiles.

Unemployment duration and employability in remote rural labor markets

Article Abstract:

The barriers to work faced by long- and short-term unemployed people in remote rural labor markets are analyzed. The specific job search and other employment problems faced by unemployed people leaving in isolated rural communities are identified and potential policies to address the needs of unemployed individuals are discussed.
