Contemporary maritime piracy in Southeast Asia

Article Abstract:

The growing incidence of maritime piracy in post-Cold War Southeast Asia has been a major cause of concern for shipping in the region. Contemporary piracy can be classified into three kinds: thefts or attacks on harbor and anchorage, robbery and ransacking of vessels on the high seas or in territorial waters, and hijacking of vessels to convert them for illegal trading. The number of piracy attacks has dramatically increased from three in 1989 to 404 in 1996. The steps taken by ship owners, shipping organizations and international maritime bodies are discussed.
