Contracts and the quasi-market in community health services
Article Abstract:
Reliance on contracts for health care creates problems for community health services (CHS). Although the National Health Service is trying to promote competition within health care industries through economic reforms, the reforms are difficult to implement within CHS because the reforms do not address specific CHS concerns. Quasi-market concepts state that purchasers of health services will first decide their needs and then receive information on appropriate providers and contracts. The NHS follows quasi-market concepts, but they are difficult to apply in the CHS sector.
