Coping strategies and continued drug use among methadone maintenance patients

Article Abstract:

Structural equation modeling is used to asses the factor structure of coping measures such as drug addiction and alcoholism in a sample of 276 methadone maintenance patients. The results indicate that coping styles are related to psychopathology and that this relationship differs for black patients and for white patients. The coping substances used are also different among the two communities. The relationship between coping with stress and substance abuse forms the focus of the study.

Treatment of maternal addiction to prevent child abuse and neglect

Article Abstract:

A treatment model for substance abusing mothers, who are at risk for child abuse and neglect, is presented. Based on child maltreatment literature and substance abuse research, the model underscores the need for these two fields to collaborate to help substance abusing women simultaneously raise children and overcome their addiction. Thus, interventions for this group should consider the mothers' economic as well as emotional needs if they are to be effective.

Pretreatment dropout as a function of treatment delay and client variables

Article Abstract:

A retrospective analysis of factors influencing preintake dropouts in patients calling to make intake appointments for cocaine treatment reveals that prolonged time periods between initial telephone contact and subsequent appointment is inversely proportional to the chances of clients keeping their appointments. Maximum decline in initial attendance occurs on the first day after telephonic inquiry.
