Cultivating sociological detachment through reflexivity: Response to Quilley and Loyal

Article Abstract:

The necessity for detachment and it's potential in terms of scientific understanding given in the sociology of Norbert Elias's 'human science', is argued. It is concluded that Elias's 'human sciences' is very modest in generating knowledge in the world of detachment, where as Stephen Quilley and Steven Loyal's sociology speaks the larger trends about the social world in a vocabulary of detachment.

The claims that sociology should be a science and that Norbert Elias's work provided the best evidence in social science are exaggerated. The work of Elias that offers a thought-provoking point to overcome the legacy of the eshortE 20th century is appreciated and at the same time, the foundation of a 'central theory' is opposed.
