Depression and smoking cessation: the role of motivation and self-efficacy

Article Abstract:

Current smokers have higher mean depression scores than former smokers and never smokers, according to research designed to establish how depressive symptoms are connected with smoking cessation motivation and self-efficacy in the general population. For female smokers, higher depression scores were connected with a higher motivation to stop smoking. Higher depression scores were linked with a lower smoking cessation self-efficacy, particularly among male smokers. Smokers with higher depressive symptoms seemed to be more motivated to stop than non-depressed smokers were.

Effect of smoking cues and cigarette availability on craving and smoking behavior

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the reaction of smokers in SMOKE and NO SMOKE groups to smoking cues in contrast to affectively neutral and unpleasant cues lacking smoking content indicates that both the groups perceived unpleasant cues as affectively more adverse than the neutral affect cues. Drug-related content accounted for the effect of drug-cues on craving followed by drug-use indicating that drug-related cues are affected by perceived drug-availability.
