Racial/ethnic disparities in infant mortality: the role of behavioral factors

Article Abstract:

This study investigates the role of behavioral factors in explaining racial and ethnic disparities in infant mortality and finds that behavioral factors play a small role in mortality rates. Most significant were weight gain during pregnancy and smoking. Substance abuse variables were unimpressive in explaining neonatal death considering the amount of scholarly and public attention received, according to the report.

Another look at mortality crossovers

Article Abstract:

There is a considerable debate regarding the reality of 'mortality crossover,' the intersection on age curves at advanced ages. There are critics who feel that this is a result of improper report of ages, greater for one population than another. The other school of critics relate this to differing aging processes at advanced ages. The ongoing debate has been analyzed from a historical perspective.

Demographic and socioeconomic links to cigarette smoking

Article Abstract:

A study based on 1990 National Health Interview Survey's Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Supplement in the United States reveals that males have a higher rate of smoking compared to females. Age was a very dominant factor in all the results. The study of demographic and socioeconomic factors linked with smoking statuses can help in better targeting of the anti-smoking programs.
