Developmental social work education: a field example

Article Abstract:

South Africa is experiencing profound reconstruction and development. This then is a pivotal period for social work education as the role of social workers in reconstruction and development is being widely debated and many social workers are uncertain of the consequences of a new focus on community development and feel threatened by it. A vision for social work education in harmony with South Africa's reconstruction and development is presented.

Article Abstract:

Welfare policy in South /africa is moving from a social service approach to a developmental approach. Social workers are seeking ways to continue the present services while defining their new roles. The historically divided welfare system has to be transformed into an agency that acknowledges the links between economic development and social conditions. The new system will have to address the needs of urban and rural communities.
