Does social capital still matter? Immigrant minority disadvantage in school-specific social capital and its effects on academic achievement

Article Abstract:

The determinants of social capital and its effects on school achievement for minority and immigrant students are examined. Results indicate that compared to third-generation White students, immigrant Asians, Hispanics and third-generation African American students possess less social capital and minority and immigrant children receive differential returns to intergenerational closure and parent-school involvement.

Immigration from Mexico, school composition, and adolescent functioning

Article Abstract:

A study explores generational differences among the youth of Mexican American population both within and across schools, to determine whether assimilation has positive or negative consequences in the long-term for the population. The results revealed that rates of academic failure and risk of obesity were high among the second generation of the Mexican American youth.

Adolescent friendships as academic resources: the intersection of friendship, race, and school disadvantage

Article Abstract:

The two neglected facets of adolescent friendship are studied which are their role in positive adjustment and the way in which this role varies by social structural and institutional context. It is found that this potential protective role of friends did not differ by race, but by level of school disadvantage.
