Emotional and behavioral problems of Asian American adolescents: a comparative study

Article Abstract:

A comparison of social, behavioral and academic functioning of Asian and Caucasian American students shows that Asian American students do well academically and are considered well behaved in schools. But they have a lower self image and are more withdrawn, anxious and depressed. They also have fewer role model and less social support. These Asian American students are exposed to greater risk of mental health problems than the Caucasian American students.

Risk and resilience in late adolescence

Article Abstract:

A study of 108 at-risk adolescents who were grouped into 3 categories of varying depression criteria showed that the greatest difficulties were experienced by the group with major depression. Greater resilience was observed among youth who had strong family ties and received social support. Youth with least levels of depression reported better functioning and well-being in terms of addressing behavioral difficulties, academic requirements and self-esteem.
