Ethnic humor and the demise of the Russel brothers

Article Abstract:

John and James Russell, who epitomized 19th century American vaudeville comedy, portraying the crude behaviour of Irish immigrant women employed in domestic service, faded out in the 20th century, as audience preference shifted towards more refined comedy. The popularity of vaudeville was attributed to the burlesque, knockabout style of 'dame impersonation,' which reflected male disapproval of efforts by women to assert their rights.
