For what it's worth

Article Abstract:

Joel F. Handler claims that postmodernism paralyzes politics rather than serving as an engine of social change. His analysis shows that he misunderstands postmodernism. Postmodernism recognizes that meaning is based in social practices, but that we live in a world where traditional social practices are breaking apart. Politics cannot possibly be an agent of change if the actors continue to be defined by constructs they are trying to change.

Postmodernism and protest: recovering the sociological imagination

Article Abstract:

Joel F. Handler explains well the difficulties of drawing any social action goals from the postmodernist perspective. Postmodernism concentrates on the individual rather than on the commonalities which bind people in society. The challenge is to blend this approach and that of traditional sociology in doing research and developing ways to change society.

Doing the right thing? Toward a postmodern politics

Article Abstract:

Joel F. Handler errs in his conclusion that postmodernism fails as a radical political model and a way of bringing about social change. Postmodernism welcomes change but because of a conviction that there is no one right way of proceeding rejects universal theories and single visions of social change.
