Forgotten roots of the green city: Subsistence gardening in Columbus, Ohio, 1900-1940

Article Abstract:

The processes of the removal of subsistence gardens, which were a significant land use in the Columbus, Ohio area from 1900 to 1940, are investigated. The gardens were created during the Great Depression as relief measures, however, the City of Columbus felt that such practices did not produce normal urban spaces and so these gardens were transformed into more appropriate cityscapes.
