Toward a social geography of the city: race and dimensions of urban poverty in women's lives

Article Abstract:

A survey of some 100 Anglo and African-American women from Grand Rapids, Michigan, shows that African-American women bear the brunt of poverty most heavily. Urban studies tend not to take race into account as much as they do class and gender. The way that households are involved in social networks differs along racial lines, as well as the way that they are involved in employment. Poverty affects neighborhood and kinship patterns, and poverty in turn is affected by race.

Do we really wish to live in a communitarian city?: Communitarian thinking and the redevelopment of Chicago's Cabrini-Green public housing complex

Article Abstract:

Communitarianism, a movement involving policy experts, communities, and governments, includes two important texts: Amitai Etzioni's 'The Spirit of Community' and Alan Ehrenhalt's 'The Lost City.' Redevelopment proposals for the Cabrini-Green complex in Chicago, IL, discuss whether a true "communitarian city" will result from a public-private partnership seeking to rebuild this public housing site.

"Decent people shouldn't live here": the American city in cinema

Article Abstract:

The treatment of US cities in cinemas is examined through a study of how these cities are depicted by American moviemakers. Films are partly responsible for the occurrence and perception of urban affairs. Movies are effective venues for looking into urban pasts, presents and futures, aside from being able to offer insights into the Americans' collective hopes, fears, phobias and fantasies.
