From Victorian to Victoria's Secret: the foundations of modern erotic wear

Article Abstract:

Victoria's Secret grew from 167 stores and $112 million sales in 1986 to 353 stores and $250 million sales in 1990. Although the franchise offers a diverse product line, it specializes in a line of underwear patterned after such Victorian era garments as corset and bodysuit. Victoria's Secret also uses the Victorian theme in its store displays, merchandising and marketing practices. However, the franchise's revitalization of the Victorian corset and its attempts to evoke memories of an old-fashioned era are not an innocent merchandising strategy as they only serve to define women's bodies as sexually desirable even as they trap women in today's cultural prisons.

'Finnegans Wake,' 'Lady Pokingham,' and Victorian erotic fantasy

Article Abstract:

James Joyce's dream novel 'Finnegans Wake' has a number of similarities with pornography. It has no beginning or end, and its characters and themes are repeatedly introduced. Point of view changes very suddenly, and there is clear obsession in language and idea. Similarly, point of view also shifts very rapidly in 'Lady Pokingham,' and there are many references to specific names of characters. Joyce exploits and effectively mocks the language and tone of pornography, and successful subverts the genre of the novel.
