Health care professionals and social workers have an obligation to their patients and clients to monitor and participate in the legislative process. Since laws and regulations have a direct impact on how professionals can provide care and to whom, medical and social service workers should support government legislation that offers easily available and accessible care.

The inadequacy of US health care and social services can be mitigated through volunteerism. Although President Clinton has called on all Americans to participate, professionals in the medical and community services should lend their expertise on a regular basis to help individuals who require more assistance and care than can be provided by public programs.
