From women in the welfare state to gendering welfare state regimes

Article Abstract:

Gender analysis can be useful in understanding welfare state structures and the role of women within them, but a multi-faceted approach based on gender, race, and class may be more appropriate. Caregiving, dependence, citizenship, and the labor market are areas in which the role of women has shifted dramatically since the 1960s. In the 1990s, constraints on resources have restructured the welfare state and women's ways of participating in it. These changes require a gendering of welfare state regimes to acknowledge and facilitate the role of women as wage-earners, caregivers, and citizens.
