Gardenesque imagery in the representation of regional and national identity: the Cotswold garden of stone

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern the impact of the rural landscape on the formation of English national identity, focusing on gardenesque imagery used to describe the Cotswolds in the first half of the 20th century. Topics addressed include the construction of regional identity, metaphors occurring in landscape-related literature, and the relationship between the community and the environment.

Meat processing and Garden City, KS: Boom and bust

Article Abstract:

The social and economic consequences for a town when a major engine of its economy goes flop are described. On Christmas night in 2000, a fire destroyed one of the beef plants in Garden City that put 2300 people out of work and the plant is still closed after four years, resulting in decline of town's economy.

The crisis of representation: the limits of liberal democracy in the global era

Research suggests that governmental inability to control both economic and non-economic environments results in a crisis of representation, with serious implications to the legitimacy of democracy. A discussion follows regarding Classical Liberalism, Revisionist Liberalism, and Neo Liberalism.
