Geertz's ambiguous legacy

Article Abstract:

The collection of essays in Clifford Geertz's book, 'The Interpretation of Cultures: Selected Essays,' identifies the object of culture by developing a theoretical language to discuss culture. Geertz advocated the idea of relating a text to any other text which might reveal the semiotic structure of a culture. However, he has been criticised for obscuring the objects of his study through difficult theoretical analysis. His controversial statements in favor of interpretation and against explanation have distanced the readers from the depth and originality of his theories.

Violent films cry 'fire' in crowded theaters

Article Abstract:

Films championing violence and aggressive behavior are the equivalent of inciting a false emergency in a crowded theater. Films inspiring real-life acts of violence, such as Money Train, should be regulated, but the courts' interpretation of incitement laws and toxic speech favor the film industry. Since the movie industry fail to be responsibly self-regulatory, the proliferation of violent films contributes to a general societal indifference to violent acts.

Welfare to work: a sequel

Article Abstract:

In 1994, Moore's new job seemed to be her way out of the welfare system, and the road to self-sufficiency. But by 1997, she was back on welfare and drugs. How chronic low wages, a jobless man who felt neglected, weak friends, depression, and low self-esteem defeated her, are detailed.
