Immigration to Delaware: the changing face of Georgetown, DE and environs

Article Abstract:

Delaware initiated steps to uplift the abject economic, health and social conditions of Guatemalan immigrants and other Hispanic Americans in Georgetown and other areas. These programs are committed to the integration of Hispanic Americans in the state and the mobilization of agencies to address the special needs of the immigrants. Majority of the Guatemalan and Hispanic immigrants entered the US by working in poultry processing firms. However, their influx have caused social tensions due to crimes, poor housing and local residents' wariness of immigrants.

The political context of immigration

Article Abstract:

Anti-foreigner sentiments continue to flourish in Europe as citizens blame migrants for the rise in unemployment. The European ideal of common ancestry leads them to perceive migrants as burdens in terms of social security and economic responsibility. On the other hand, the US had always been a nation of migrants and thrives on the Enlightenment ideal. However, this pattern is becoming obsolete in age of individualism wherein various groups are asserting their right to practice their own cultural norms.

A song in South Philadelphia: St. Thomas Aquinas Church

Article Abstract:

The parish of St. Thomas Aquinas in Philadelphia, PA, created the Asian Social Service Center in 1988. The main goal of the organization is to help the refugees in the parish establish new and better lives. Although the institution is Catholic, it does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of religion. The heads of the parish help promote multi-cultural awareness by giving homilies in Vietnamese and Italian. They also help refugees assimilate into the mainstream society by giving English lessons.
