Insularity and accessibility: the small island communities of western Ireland

Article Abstract:

The economic conditions of rural Irish islands are examined, focusing on how well the islands are able to meet the service and transportation needs of their inhabitants. Topics include population profiles since 1971; types of island services available, including food, medical, and educational services; patterns of travel to the mainland; and patterns of improvement of transportation services.

Responding to economic change in remote, rural regions: federal installations in Idaho and Washington

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented on possible effects of further reductions in the nuclear arms industry, focusing on the Dept. of Energy facilities in Hanford, WA and the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. Also included are potential solutions to economic declines, such as the development of agricultural and retail industries and federal economic assistance.

The role of the Conservation Reserve Program in controlling rural residential development

Article Abstract:

A land-use prediction model has been developed for analyzing the effect of the US Department of Agriculture Conservation Reserve Program has on rural development. This model shows approximately half the growth rate of communities without this program and increased ecosystem integrity.
