Introduction: the sociology of collective action reconsidered

Article Abstract:

The sociology of collective action seeks to demonstrate how active life overcomes inertia and how actors constitute themselves as subjects in ways that are subtle and unpredictable. The article reviews social movement theories with the critical aim of building a new platform for discussing the relationship between subjects and collective action.

The large-scale random-assignment social experiments like Canadian Self-Sufficiency Project address important sociological and developmental issues. The methods and results from the recent sets of random-assignment experiments are reviewed.
