Beyond the molar-molecular distinction: we need multiscaled analysis

Article Abstract:

This article critiques the use of molecular analysis to investigate the development of avoidance behavior in animals during tasks involving electric shocks. Multiscaled analysis is presented as a superior method to investigate the relationship between natural stimuli, reinforcement, and avoidance behavior in animals.

Key pecking during extinction after intermittent or continuous reinforcement as a function of the number of reinforcers delivered during training

Article Abstract:

The partial reinforcement extinction effect describes the persistence in responding during extinction, following a history of intermittent reinforcement, as compared to reinforcement of every response. Pigeons elicit fewer responses during extinction in the presence of a stimulus correlated with fixed-ratio schedule, irrespective of the number of reinforcers received. Within-subject replications of the partial-reinforcement extinction effect occur without any overall reduction in the number of responses in extinction, inspite of repeated exposure to extinction.
