Law and ethics

Article Abstract:

Ethical questions have arisen from three new developments in the US. The first was about the American Medical Assn's plan to raise funds by allowing Sunbeam, a manufacturer of medical equipment and supplies, to carry the organization's seal of approval on the packaging of its products. This plan was later modified in response to public criticism. The second dealt with physician Mark Bogart's requiring of royalties for the use of the test he developed for diagnosing prenatal children with Down Syndrome. The third involved the proposal to legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

Law and ethics

Article Abstract:

The ethical problems surrounding assisted suicide cannot be solved by mere principles. This is because economic reasonableness is based on fact and on the amount worth spending. The latter is deeply rooted on public perception of death. Most patients have been found to fear suffocation, pain and being a burden to others. They stress the value of dignity, choice, comfort and the participation of their families and loved ones in end-of-life care.

Law and ethics

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court does not consider physician-assisted suicides a constitutionally protected right. However, the Court allows certain situations when a person may have a constitutionally protected interest in deciding for his own death especially if he is terminally ill. Thus, each American state is free to to ban physician-assisted suicides or tolerate its practice.
