Life and death on a small island: Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees in Indonesia

Article Abstract:

The Comprehensive Plan of Action was created by the UN in 1988 to improve resettlement conditions of Southeast Asian refugees and promote hospitality and tolerance of them in countries of first asylum. Indonesia, one of the five countries of first asylum, has a refugee processing center in Galang sponsored by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Alarmingly however, the resettlement of refugees in this center had been proceeding at a slow pace. Inspite of the stressful conditions in the camp and the usual episodes of violence, most of the asylum seekers have refused repatriation.

Paul O'Dwyer: Irish immigrant

Article Abstract:

Irish American human rights activist Paul O'Dwyer died on Jun 24, 1998 after a successful, though less conspicuous career in diplomacy. Unknown to many, O'Dwyer had been instrumental in the negotiation of several international conflicts. Some of which includes the political representation of the Ulster Defense Assn in Northern Ireland and the Iranian government's recovery of the Shah's belongings in the US. O'Dwyer believed that human rights and justice do not favor any race or color and dedicated his life to the amelioration of people who suffered exploitation from others.

Refugees: human rights in economic globalization

Article Abstract:

Refugees must be guaranteed their human rights to save them from political and economic degradation amid increasing economic globalization. The cases of a Chilean military officer who was granted immunity despite being an abuser of human rights and a 20-year-old woman from El Salvador who faces deportation because she is ineligible for a refugee visa or immigrant status deftly illustrate the consequences of economic globalization and the need for universal social responsibility.
