Medical modernisation, scientific research fields and the epistemic politics of health social movements

An overview is presented on the interrelationship of scientific knowledge and lay/alternative knowledge in the health care industry, focusing on the public's role in shaping science. The emerging politics are conceptualized as medical modernization, necessitating an integration of science sociology and medical sociology.

Health consumer groups in the UK: a new social movement?

An overview is presented on social networking formed around shared illnesses or medical conditions, generating a health consumer movement. Implications, such as increased opportunities for political participation by these groups, are discussed.

Regenerating movements: embryonic stem cells and the politics of potentiality

The US biotechnology industry is used to illustrate public participation in constructing scientific knowledge, specifically via social activism. A theoretical frame drawn from social movement theory is developed and applied.
