Models of the life course

Article Abstract:

'The American Occupational Structure' (AOS) by Peter Blau and Otis Duncan has been instrumental in the development of life-course studies. Life-course analysis emphasises time, process and context. It is oriented towards the explanation of historical effects, the process of status transmission and behavioral change in a life span. The AOS focused on the explanatory method in studies of status transmission and achievement through its path analytic models. Two contributions of the Blau-Duncan model that have special significance are the path through early work experience and event timing in the transition to adulthood.

Trends in the process of social stratification

Article Abstract:

'The American Occupational Structure' (AOS) has given important contributions to the understanding of changes in stratification. In the AOS' basic model, fathers' educational attainment and occupational status affect their sons' educational attainment. However, innovations in stratification research has contrasted with the AOS model due to the focus on an individual's entire sequence of education and occupational status, transitions between socioeconomic levels and the timing of transitions.
